Concert Band News

Posted 10/07/07: 2007 - 2008 MHS Concert band will begin rehearsals the first full week of November. All students must be signed up for MHS band class to be a member of the concert band. There will be NO after school rehearsals for concert band until it is determined that we need them. As of now, the only performances scheduled for the MHS concert band are; December, 10th – MHS Christmas Concert December, 15th - MHS Madrigal(selected members only) December, 18th – Possible Performance at MMS. All performances will be worth 50 points. Attire will be determined at a later date.

Concert Band Program

At the conclusion of the marching season, Concert Band begins with all wind and percussion students auditioning for seating assignment in Concert Band. As enrollment allows, Concert Band is split between Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. Auditions consist of all major scales, sight-reading, and prepared selections. Auditions are blind.

Concert Band performs music of the highest quality stressing fundamentals of tone production, musicianship, theory, and interpretation of various styles. Members of this group are eligible to audition for the Illinois Music Educators District and State level conventions, Heartland Honor Bands, River to River Conference Band, and participate with the jazz band, jazz combos, and with various small ensembles throughout the year.

All students in Concert Band participate in Solo and Ensemble Contest, as well as Organizational Contest and various other concert band performances throughout the year. Students also perform at home basketball games as the Pep Band. Students demonstrate their mastery of concert selections and assigned etudes through regular performance evaluations.

Concert Band performs at least three concerts a year in addition to extra-curricular such as touring to all elementary schools within the Murphysboro School District, community events, and concert band invitational contests. Members of Concert Band are also eligible for Winter Percussion and Winter Color Guard.
